Great Slave Dental

Straighter teeth without flying south. Invisalign Preferred Provider in Yellowknife.

For a long time, getting clear aligners in the NWT often meant trips to Edmonton — consults, scans, check-ins, and the flights and hotels that went with them. Great Slave Dental is an Invisalign Preferred Provider, and for most cases the whole course of treatment happens right here on 48th Street.

What Preferred Provider means

Invisalign assigns provider status based on the number of cases a practice has completed. Preferred Provider status means we've treated enough patients to earn that designation — in practice, that aligner cases are a regular part of what we do rather than something we take on occasionally. It also means we've seen enough variety to know when Invisalign is the right call and when it isn't, and we'll say so either way.

The free consultation

We book about an hour for your first visit, at no charge. Dr. Armstrong will talk through what you want to change, then take an iTero digital scan — a small wand that maps your teeth in 3D, no goopy impression trays. Within minutes you'll see a simulation of how your teeth would move through treatment to the predicted end result. You'll also get a sense of whether you're looking at a short course for mild crowding or a full treatment plan, and roughly how long it would take.

Living with aligners

Clear aligners are worn twenty to twenty-two hours a day — off for meals and brushing. You change trays every one to two weeks. Small tooth-coloured attachments are bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip. With Dental Monitoring — our remote check-in platform, where you take photos from home for our team to review — in-person check-ins usually sit a couple of months apart rather than every few weeks. Dr. Armstrong sets your exact schedule at the consult. Helpful if you work at the mines or travel for government and can't always come into town.

Pricing at Great Slave Dental

We quote Invisalign as a flat fee, and for most cases that covers your aligners, any refinements, and your first set of retainers — your written quote sets out exactly what's included. Many employer plans carry an orthodontic benefit, often a lifetime maximum somewhere around $2,500 to $3,500 reimbursed at 50%, though it varies plan to plan. You'll get an exact quote at your free consultation, and we run a predetermination with your insurer beforehand so you go in with their written estimate rather than a guess.

Common questions

Am I a candidate for Invisalign?+

Many adults and teens with healthy teeth and gums are candidates, and we also treat pre-teens with Invisalign First for mixed-dentition cases. Some bites — particularly severe skeletal discrepancies or cases needing jaw surgery — are better handled by an orthodontist, and we'll say so. Dr. Armstrong will assess your bite at the free consultation, scan your teeth with the iTero, and tell you honestly either way.

Can I do Invisalign if I have crowns or implants?+

Crowns can usually be worked around. Implants don't move, so the treatment plan accounts for them. Dr. Armstrong will assess this at the consultation.

How often do I need to come in?+

Typically a couple of months between in-person check-ins, though your exact schedule depends on your treatment plan. Between visits, many patients use Dental Monitoring — you take photos from home and we review them.
